Churches are helping homeless children have a happy Christmas this year by providing presents.

It's part of the Matthew Project, which has been giving gifts to homeless children in the Hernando County School System since 2010.

"We get a list of children that has been designated homeless through the Hernando County schools and we get churches and organizations to sponsor these children each year," said founder Monte Patterson. "Last year we provided gifts for 304 students

Patterson expects this year's need to be the biggest yet - but that means the biggest year for donations, too.

"This year the need is even bigger. "It's amazing how generous people are out there for children they don't even know," Patterson said.

The Matthew Project is still in need of help to fulfill its mission. For more information visit their Facebook page.
