PALM HARBOR (FOX 13) - A team from the Suncoast Animal League returned from Puerto Rico with two dogs and two cats from overcrowded shelters there.
They say they would have brought more animals back, but the airline limited them to one animal per team member.
Team leader Annette Dettloff says she's ready to go back to Puerto Rico for more animals.
"We need a cargo plane in order to go out there and load up 20, 30, 40, 50 dogs and cats and bring them back," Dettloff said.
The team spent four days in Puerto Rico delivering medicine and other supplies to animal shelters. They say, in many cases, pets are the last thing residents worry about.
"They're without water, without electricity. How do you function on a day-to-day basis? So, they're evacuating from the island and they can't take their pets with them," Detloff added.
