Playful dolphins join canoeist for a day on the water

A canoeist captured video of a young, playful dolphin off the shores of a south Pinellas County beach last week.

The dolphin seemed to want to play fetch, behaving almost like a canine.

Michael McCarthy was in his See Through Canoe when he came across the young dolphin.

“The dolphin was like a happy dog with a stick that just couldn't stop wiggling,” McCarthy told FOX 13 News. “After picking up this mangrove seed and tossing it in the air a couple times, he came over to the canoe with the seed in its mouth like a stick, as if to show it off or entice me to play.”

Another dolphin came to join the fun and the two swam back and forth under the clear canoe.

McCarthy is typically armed with cameras when he sets out for a day on the water and luckily, on this day, he was armed with a second camera mounted underneath the canoe.

“I caught the entire thing on video underwater.  If you turn up the volume you can hear the dolphins vocalizing,” McCarthy said.
