Sam's Club closing 'series' of U.S. stores, including in Tampa

A local Sam’s Club is among several U.S. locations shutting its doors for good.

A Walmart spokesperson said the Tampa club at 5135 South Dale Mabry Highway will only stay open until January 26, citing "financial" reasons.

The Tampa store closed Thursday to inform associates of the decision. Hourly employees will receive compensation for 60 days while they search for other opportunities in Sam's Club or Walmart stores. If they haven't transferred by the end of the 60 days, they can receive a severance, if eligible.

For customers who would like a refund on their annual membership, call Sam's Club Customer Service at (888) 746-7726.

“We made the difficult decision to close the club,” according to a Walmart statement. “Our hope is that many associates at the Club will choose to stay with the company via transfer and we’ll begin working to make that happen."

There are reports of Sam's Club closures across the country, including in Tennessee and Maryland.

The company tweeted:

After a thorough review of our existing portfolio, we’ve decided to close a series of clubs and better align our locations with our strategy. Closing clubs is never easy and we’re committed to working with impacted members and associates through this transition.
