Sarasota community rattled after three shootings in one week
SARASOTA (FOX 13) - The sight of yellow crime scene tape off 20th Street in Sarasota upsets Rose McKenzie.
"It concerns me because there [are] young children around. I want them to stop carrying the guns," she said.
She's reacting to what's seen as yet another shooting.
Sarasota police say two men walked up to a home in the 1500 block of 20th Street Friday morning.
One of them - described as bald and stocky - approached a man and shot him twice in the leg, then took off.
"It's all hands on deck when this happens," said Genevieve Judge with the Sarasota Police Department.
It's a handful for police. This is the third shooting in three days in the Newtown community.
A person was shot in their car in the 1800 block of 23rd Street on Tuesday night.
Earlier Friday morning, a man was shot outside a home near Dr.Martin Luther King Way and Pershing Avenue.
"This is a concern for our detectives, just the number of shootings that have occurred just this week alone," said Judge.
In each of the cases, police said the shootings were targeted. The people who were shot will survive, but investigators have little to go on.
"Unfortunately a lot of folks don't come forward during incidents like this but we are hoping... that they'll realize there might be an issue happening," said Judge.
After decades of cutting hair, Jetson Grimes knows his community inside and out. He's seen this pattern in the past.
"There is a concern in the community," said Grimes.
He's optimistic the violence won't continue.
"For the last year we haven't had any incidents here, it's just one of those things we just need to move the community forward," he said.
Anyone with information on any of the shootings is asked to call the Sarasota Police Department at 941-316-1199 or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers of Sarasota by calling 941-366-TIPS or online at www.sarasotacrimestoppers.com.
