Sheriff: Deputies shoot, kill armed suspect in Lake Wales

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd says his deputies were forced to open fire a man armed with an AR-15 and a rifle during a domestic violence incident in Lake Wales Saturday.

The subject later died from his injuries.

It started Saturday around 8 a.m. at a home on Cottage Hill Street. Someone called the sheriff's office because 46-year-old Shannon Jason Cables had injured his wife and 19-year-old daughter, who were able to escape to a neighbor's home.

When deputies arrived, Cables had fled. The victims were taken by two of the deputies for treatment of their injuries while two others stayed at the home and others continued the search.

The women were brought home from the hospital shortly after 2 p.m. While they and four deputies/detectives were inside, one of the women saw Cables approaching the rear of the home.

Sheriff Grady Judd says Cables was holding an AR-15 and a shotgun.

One of the detectives came out of a side door and ordered Cables to drop his firearms.

The detective says Cables pointed the AR-15 in his direction at which time a gunfight ensued.

Another detective and patrol deputy also engaged Cables from the area of the back door.

Once Cables was no longer a threat, the deputies and detectives rendered first aid until EMS could take him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

There are four ongoing investigations: A death investigation by the PCSO Bureau of Criminal Investigations; an internal investigation by the PCSO Administrative Investigations Unit; an autopsy by the Medical Examiner; and the State Attorney's Office, who review all of the investigations once they are completed.
