Shore-based shark fishing rule changes move toward approval

TAMPA, Fla. (FOX 13) - The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is moving forward with changes to regulations on shore-based shark fishing.

FWC says the changes will increase the survival of released sharks and address some safety concerns related to shark fishing.

The new rules would require anyone who fishes for shark from the shore to have a no-cost permit, prohibit chumming on the beach, and prohibit delaying the release of certain shark species. 

The rules also require certain species of shark be left in the water, certain types of hooks be used, and possession of a device for quickly cutting a hook.

FWC says the drafted rules will be brought back to FWC for final approval in February.
