More than 100 dogs and cats rescued from Puerto Rico are ready to be adopted.

Dr. Nanette Parra, a veterinarian in St. Petersburg, has been working diligently to spay and neuter them and make sure they are healthy.

When she heard that the Suncoast Animal League was bringing the animals to the states, something immediately crossed her mind.

“What can I do to help?” she said. “I’ll be more than happy to.”

Parra has been performing surgeries, doing medical exams, and has even taken several of the medically needy dogs on as long-term projects, all for free.

“She just stepped in and opened her arms, and we opened our arms to her,” said Rick Chaboudy, who heads the Suncoast Animal League.

Parra is just one of the people who has given the animals a second chance at life. Helen Rich, a local animal lover paid $125, 000 to rent a cargo plane to get them here. A team of volunteers went to the Island to find them.

A local business donated warehouse space to house them.

If you have an interest in possibly adopting one, they are going to be at Dogtoberfest, Saturday, November, 11. It is being held at Highlander Park in  Dunedin from 11:30 am to 5 p.m.
