Sarasota County Sheriff deputies investigated a Wednesday morning crash involving a 15-year-old boy.

Deputies responded to an accident between Benjamin Nicholson, who was riding a bicycle, and a vehicle around 7:22 a.m. The crash occurred in front of Pine View school located at 425 Old Venice Road. Florida Highway Patrol troopers said the teen, who was not wearing a helmet, cut in front of a car. The driver tried to stop, but couldn't avoid him.

Aerials from SkyFOX showed multiple FHP patrol cars around a white Mercedes-Benz. The vehicle's windshield was busted from the impact. The school's principal said he arrived just after it happened and the Nicholson's bicycle was destroyed.

"I think he recognized lots of us -- his teacher, his principal and lots of folks from the community," said the principal, Dr. Stephen Covert. "He seems like he was going to be OK, and he knew he was getting the attention he needed."

FHP said it appeared the teen had a leg injury and possible concussion. He was transported by Bayflight to All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg. The driver will not face charges, according to troopers.

"You've got to be careful on that bicycle. You've got to wear your safety helmet, and you have to have that good situational awareness," said Trooper Ken Watson, an FHP spokesperson. "Know when and where you should cross that street. If at all possible, you want to get somewhere there is a crosswalk and if not dismount the bicycle, wait for a clearing and walk that bike across the road."

Sarasota County students had their first day of classes Monday.
