Thieves steal safe from kids football team

NEW PORT RICHEY - New Port Richey police are still looking for the thief or thieves who stole a safe from the locked concession stand at the New Port Richey Buccaneers late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning.

The kids, football players and cheerleaders, lost $500 in quarters and more than $10,000 in discount cards which they were selling to help pay for a banquet and other events.

When Mike Schmidt saw our report about what happened to the New Port Richey Buccaneers it was like getting punched in the stomach.

"I still have kids in school and was wondering what would happen if it happened to their school," he said. "I figured I would pitch in and try to help."

So Schmidt's business, All Hour Towing, donated $100. It will go into the kitty which just took a hard hit.

"They are still going to have homecoming," said Buccaneers board member Tracy Finkelstein. "We are still going to do the things we were doing for them, but the quality of things that we're doing is not going to be as much as it would have been."

Investigators suspect that more than one person may have been involved in the heist. It would take two people to move the safe and at least that many to lift it over the six foot fence that surrounds the field.
