A beach toll booth attendant was killed Monday afternoon after the driver of a pickup truck crashed into the booth, according to the Volusia Sheriff's Office. The crash happened around 12:30 p.m. at the Dunlawton Avenue on ramp in Daytona Beach Shores, VSO said. After hitting the toll booth, the truck continued to drive into the ocean. VSO said despite rescue efforts, the toll booth attendant did not survive. Their name has not been released.
VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. - A pickup truck slammed into a beach toll booth on Monday afternoon, killing the woman who was working inside of it, and continued to drive onto the beach, before eventually becoming stuck in the sand, according to Volusia Sheriff Mike Chitwood.
Sheriff Chitwood identified the woman killed as Tammy Jo Baker, a longtime employee with Volusia County, who now works for the beach parking contractor.

The crash happened around 12:40 p.m. at the beach entrance on-ramp near Dunlawton Avenue in Daytona Beach Shores, the Volusia Sheriff's Office said. Sheriff Chitwood said the driver crashed into the toll booth and continued to drive onto the beach toward the ocean, before attempting to make a turn and becoming stuck in the sand.
People at the beach ran towards the vehicle to help pull the driver out, Sheriff Chitwood said.
"It's senseless," said Sheriff Chitwood.
Driver detained
Sheriff Chitwood said the driver of the vehicle, a woman from Ormond Beach, had been detained. No charges were immediately announced.
Dunlawton Beach access ramp closed
The Dunlawton beach access ramp is closed and will remain closed until further notice.
