A young mother battling cancer is working to help others fight the disease.

Tonya Ferguson Chams is 33 and a former emergency room nurse in Sebring. Doctors discovered she had colon cancer two years ago while she was pregnant.

She gave birth at 30 weeks. Her daughter Sophia weighed 2 pounds, 11 ounces.

"I will never be considered cured because I'm Stage Four. I'd love to go in remission; that is my goal, or at least get enough time where Sophia will remember me," Tonya explained.

Her former co-workers, friends, and family pitched in to form Team Tonya to raise awareness and encourage people to get a colonoscopy. They're also helping organize the Relay For Life to benefit the American Cancer Society this Saturday, April 13 in Highlands County.
