It is something to be proud of, and the Better Business Bureau wants to make sure folks use that giving nature, but use it wisely. They encourage people to visit GIVE.ORG to do background research on a given charity. If you are worried about going through a third party, the BBB says skip it and give straight to a charity already on the ground. The Bahamas Red Cross Society would be one example.
