10 years later, TPD remembers Corporal Mike Roberts
TAMPA, Fla. - A memorial was held this morning to remember a former Tampa police officer. Corporal Mike Roberts was shot and killed 10 years ago today.
Mayor Jane Castor and Chief Brian Dugan joined Roberts' family and former colleagues at a remembrance ceremony in front of TPD's monument for fallen officers.
Castor was police chief at the time of Corporal Roberts' death.
It happened in 2009, when Roberts responded to a call about a suspicious person and encountered Humberto Delgado pushing a shopping cart. He ended up fighting with Delgado over weapons in the cart, and was killed when a bullet struck part of his body not protected by body armor.
Roberts left behind a wife and a son, who was 3 at the time.
Delgado was convicted and is serving a life sentence.
