Ceiling collapse at retirement community displaces residents

A ceiling collapse led to evacuations in Sun City Center retirement community Thursday.

According to Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, seven residents evacuated a condo building at the Aston Gardens at the Courtyards Independent Living Community around midnight.

A storm dumped rain Wednesday night, soaking through a roof under repair.

The water entered the attic, saturating the insulation and drywall. The impact caused the ceiling to collapse inside four condo units.

Residents evacuated the damaged units, and safety concerns prompted evacuations for three more units.

The complex staff and roof contractor helped displaced residents find lodging overnight.

The damaged building contains 16 units. It's unclear how many units were occupied at the time of the collapse.

No injuries were reported.
