Clif Bars recalled for peanut, tree nut allergen concerns

Some varieties of a popular brand of protein bar are being recalled because they could contain peanuts or tree nuts that aren't listed as an ingredient or allergen on the package.

Clif Bar & Company is voluntarily recalling its CLIF® BUILDER'S® Bars in chocolate mint flavor, and CLIF Kid Zbar® Protein in chocolate mint and chocolate chip flavors.

The company says possible contaminants could include peanuts, almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, pecans, walnuts, and coconuts. The issue was discovered when Clif Bar received a small number of consumer complaints alleging peanut or tree nut allergic reactions, but there are no confirmed illnesses associated with this recall.

Clif Bar says the recall is "precautionary" for people who are allergic to peanuts and the listed tree nuts.

The company says consumers who have peanut and these specific tree nut allergies to not consume these bars. Individuals who are not allergic to peanuts or these specific tree nuts may safely consume the products.

The affected products are sold in retail stores and online throughout the U.S.

The company is asking consumers with the listed allergies who purchased these products to return them to the store where they were purchased for an exchange or full refund.
