Dating website used to lure robbery victims
OLDSMAR (FOX 13) - Three suspects have been arrested after deputies say they used a dating website to lure their victims to a motel room in Oldsmar where they'd beat and rob them.
"The victims never actually saw the woman," said Sgt. Spencer Gross of the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.
Prospective dates assumed they were in for a good time, with a woman named"Curvy Cameron" on the site , who offered to meet them.
Deputies say Charlie Woodley, Cameron Davis weren't so gentle.
Along with Rachel Brown, they convinced the men to show up to the $60-a-night motel room.
"They had no idea that they were meeting these two male gentlemen," said Gross. "They battered them, point a gun at them, steal cash, personal belongings, credit cards."
Deputies suspect more victims are out there.
"People are victimized, and many times, they are not calling and reporting it," said Gross. "They feel guilty, embarrassment, it's a number of reasons why they may not call."
While not singling out "Plenty of Fish," which told us they want "users to be aware of the risk associated with all online exchanges," deputies urge caution when meeting new people, and say you should always do so in a place where there are witnesses.
"When I do talk to people online, I make sure I meet them in a public place and more or less in a group than just by myself," said Lauren Bennett of Tampa.
Deputies haven't determined how long this trio was running the scam.
"A motel is just thinking about those creepy scary movies," said Marc Ascencio of Tampa. "That always ends horribly."
The victims were not badly injured.
The two men have been charged with two counts of armed robbery, the woman is charged with helping them.
