Sausage bread rollup

Ingredients

  • 1 pound bulk Italian Sausage
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion, cut into small dice
  • 1 medium bell pepper, cut into small dice
  • 2 cloves garlic crushed
  • ½ teaspoon dried basil
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano
  • ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 tube Pillsbury Pizza Dough

Directions

Preheat the oven to 350°. In a large skillet over medium high heat, brown the sausage, breaking it up as it cooks. Cook for 8–10 minutes until the sausage is cooked through. Remove the sausage to a plate lined with a paper towel and set aside. Add the oil to the skillet, then the onion, pepper and garlic. Season with salt and pepper and cook, tossing occasionally until the onion and pepper are soft. Add the basil, oregano and the red pepper if you’re using it. Mix well. Add the sausage back to the pan and remove from the heat. Mix well and set aside.

Lay out the pizza dough, stretching it to its full size. Spread the sausage mixture evenly on the dough, leaving a couple of inches without filling on all four sides. Roll the dough up loosely in a jelly roll fashion. Transfer the roll, seam side down to a baking sheet that has been sprayed with Pam. Place it in the oven and cook until golden brown and puffed up, 30–40 minutes. Remove from the oven and let rest for at least 10 minutes. Slice and serve with marinara for dipping if desired.

You can let it cool completely, and it will slice better.
