A Pasco County driver lost control and died after a crash sent him into a retention pond Thursday morning.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Adam Gendreau was eastbound on State Road 54 when he lost control of his Toyota Corolla for some reason. As he accelerated toward a Kia Optima on Gateway Boulevard, the Kia’s driver swerved to avoid him.

The two vehicles collided anyway, and the Corolla plowed through a patch of trees and bushes before entering a retention pond.

Firefighters responded and pulled Gendreau out, but the 24-year-old did not survive.

Two people in the Kia were not hurt.
