Driver dies in crash involving Largo police officer

LARGO (FOX 13) - The Largo Police Department is investigating a deadly crash involving one of its own officers.

The incident happened Saturday night on E. Bay Drive near Belcher Road.

According to investigators, the officer was responding to an emergency and the patrol car's lights and sirens were on when the crash occurred.

The driver of the other vehicle involved suffered fatal injuries, officials said. The victim has been identified as 36-year-old Christopher Griffin.

The police officer, Thomas Dziamba, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. He has since been released from the hospital and is recovering.

It's unclear what exactly led up to the crash, which remains under investigation.
