Elderly man struck by truck during community service; deputies search for driver

An elderly man was hit by a vehicle while doing community service over the weekend, and Polk County deputies said they are searching for the driver after the vehicle fled.

The crash occurred Saturday around 8:20 a.m. on Old Lucerne Park Road in Winter Haven. Detectives with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said the elderly pedestrian was seriously injured when he was struck while cleaning the roadside with other members of a nearby community. Officials did not release the victim’s identity.

Investigators said they found the truck involved, but are still searching for the driver and passenger.
