Gasparilla safety: Tampa PD’s marine unit gearing up for pirate invasion
TAMPA, Fla. - The Tampa Police Department’s Marine Unit is gearing up to keep boaters safe during Gasparilla on Saturday.
Around 100 first responder boats will be out and about, working to make sure the floatilla moves safely for the invasion, which is scheduled to start around 11:30 a.m.
"On Gasparilla day, we're going to have probably close to 2,000 boats [enjoying the festivities] in the area," said Cpl. Jay Reese, with TPD's marine unit. "We certainly don't want anybody getting hit by a boat or a propeller. That's extremely dangerous."

Why you should care:
In the past, Reese said they can see a few minor boat crashes, but thankfully, nothing serious. As the day goes on, the marine unit will be watching for anyone boating under the influence.

They’re also asking people to stay out of the water due to the expected heavy traffic and the cold water temperatures.
"We've only had a few fall off. It's more people just going in for beads or just wanting to get in the water," Reese said. "The biggest thing is to stay out of the water. Hypothermia can set in very, very quickly if you go in the water."
Divers will carry some extra gear on the first responder boats, too.

"So if they have to go in the water, it can keep them warm and safe," Reese added.
What you can do:
They’re encouraging all boaters to make sure they have the proper safety equipment on board, including life jackets and fire extinguishers.
