Governor signs first-responder bill

Governor Rick Scott signed a bill Monday that will help the families of fallen first responders.  It's a victory for the wife of an Orange County sheriff's deputy who pushed to get the bill passed.

Two years ago, Bridget Pine's husband, Deputy Scott Pine, was shot and killed in the line of duty.  The mother of three found out she would only get a one-time payout since her husband opted for an investment plan instead of a traditional pension.

"Politics can be brutal," she offered, "and during the last week of session, I can remember falling on my knees, crying, and telling God that I could not fight this battle again because emotionally, it was just too hard."

Now, surviving spouses will get 100 percent of the fallen first responder's salary for the rest of their lives.
