GRU Space taking $250,000-$1 million deposits to reserve rooms for 1st moon hotel

Yes, you read that headline right. There’s a new startup in the Bay Area that’s planning on putting the first hotel on the moon.

GRU Space, founded by Skyler Chan, is taking deposits of $250,000 to $1 million to reserve a spot in what it hopes to eventually become the center of one of the first lunar hubs.

"It's innate in our (human) DNA to go and explore and expand," Chan told FOX Local. "That's why there's humans everywhere on planet Earth. And the next logical step is the moon."

Dig deeper:

GRU Space, which stands for Galactic Resource Utilization Space Inc., hopes to execute its first mission by 2029, and by its second mission, which is targeted for 2032, the first iteration of its lunar hotel will be launched.

Next, and at a date that is to be determined, the second iteration of GRU Space’s lunar hotel will come to fruition.

Hotel v1 specs

  • Hotel capacity: Four guests
  • Average stay duration: Five nights
  • Cost per person/night: $416,667

The first hotel will be an inflatable structure and have a lifespan of about 10 years. It aims to offer regular activities you’d see at an Earth hotel, such as golf, but will also offer exclusive lunar activities such as moonwalks.

Hotel v2 specs

  • Hotel capacity: Four to 10 guests
  • Average stay duration: Five nights
  • Cost per person/night: $83,333 (this price decrease is assuming commercial space travel becomes a regular and accessible mode of transportation, like flying on a plane, Chan says)

The second hotel hopes to serve as a permanent lunar habitat on the moon and will potentially inspire similar destinations on Mars.

Who will fly guests to the moon?

Ideally, a company such as SpaceX or Blue Origin will be taking guests to the moon, Chan said.

The entire trip will include a round trip ticket to the moon and back, according to GRU Space’s website.

"We align training and medical clearance with partner standards and provide pre-mission preparation, EVA planning, and contingency coverage to ensure a seamless door-to-Moon-and-back guest experience."

Reserve a spot

Though it’s very early, GRU Space is taking deposits to reserve spots in their future hotels. The price points are steep, but it will be fully refundable.

It’s also possible to place deposits as gifts for future generations.

"That's something that we've seen a lot of people say, ‘Hey, I want this to be something that my grandkids can have,’ which I think is, that's perfectly amazing," Chan said. "We can accommodate those things."

"The time is now to really make this happen for the human race. We're going to go to the moon and this time to stay," Chan added. "What a beautiful time to be alive right now."
