Kumquat Festival pays homage to tiny fruit with funny name

DADE CITY, Fla. - The annual Kumquat Festival is being held in historic downtown Dade City this weekend. 

The Kumquat Growers and the Dade City Chamber of Commerce celebrate the kumquat at the festival of the tiny fruit with the funny name. 

As many as 40,000 people head to the kumquat festival to taste the various kumquat treats from kumquat salsas and sauces, to pie and cookies, and even kumquat beer.

The Kumquat Radler beer is made from a kumquat puree, which is brewed by Pasco County's Big Storm Brewing. 

The brewers partnered up with Kumquat Growers to brew the wheat beer with a light, citrusy taste, which won an award at the Florida's Best Beer Competition last year.

There are also arts and crafts, food from local restaurants and food trucks, and live entertainment. The festival is Saturday, Jan. 27 from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. and admission is free, along with parking.

The Kumquat Growers took a hit with the cold snap freezing their crop recently, but there will be plenty of kumquat treats for festival-goers to enjoy. Growers hope that people will get to know and love the tiny fruit, and the festival helps bring an otherwise little-known fruit to families everywhere.
