Lakeland police asking for donations to purchase books for preschoolers

Lakeland police believe it is important to promote literacy in Polk County. While there are officers lining up to read books to preschool children, there isn't enough money to purchase the books.

The Lakeland Police Department participates in the Polk Heroes Literacy Program, where first responders read to preschoolers at Journey to Excellence, Inc. and Lisbon's Child Care. This happens every month, where they not only read an age-appropriate book, but they also teach them about their job.

Each child it then provided a copy of the book that was read to them, so they can take it home. However, funding is needed purchase those books.

The agency is asking anyone who is interested in donating to fund the monthly program to head over to the Polk Heroes Literacy Program website.
