Loving bad movies linked to high intelligence
LOS ANGELES, CA - If you love watching dumb movies that are “so bad, they’re good”- it might actually mean you’re a genius. A study published in the journal Poetics has found that enjoying ridiculous or gory, cheaply made films is actually linked to high intelligence.
The results of the survey, which was the first to examine "trash films" and their viewers, showed that the audiences have above-average education and a wide range of cultural interests. So you can love art museums, classic literature, AND movies with gnarly wigs, cheap effects, and the corniest lines ever written.
The enjoyment comes from the entertainment- and the irony. Film buffs take great pleasure picking apart production values, dialogue, and plot structure.
The study's author explained that bad movies are “a welcome deviation from the mainstream fare." Apparently, the more “quality” Hollywood movies you watch, the more interesting the weird ones become. Who’s suddenly inspired to host a bad movie night? Since it’s the smartest people who love the stupidest movies, we say, break out the popcorn!
