Man accidentally fires gun while taking selfie inside St. Petersburg club
ST. PETERSBURG (FOX 13) - Police say a man went into the bathroom at Club Lus Friday night to take a selfie with a handgun. But the gun went off and fired a bullet that went through the women's restroom door.
Police arrested 34-year-old Rorn Sorn after he attempted to flee.
"Only people who know what they are doing should use the guns for hunting, target practice or to defend yourself," said St. Petersburg police spokesman Rick Shaw. "They don't have any idea that the gun is loaded. Most people don't have any idea what they are doing with a semi-automatic weapon. They don't realize that there is a chambered round. They will take the clip out, and there is still a live round."
It's a good thing no one was standing on the other side of the wall when Rorn Sorn was trying to look cool.
"We are just fortunate nobody else was struck."
Sorn allegedly ran out of the club, only to be snagged by police officers on their usual Friday night detail. They were alerted that he had just fired a gun in a public place.
"For all things involved, this was the best thing that could have occurred. It just hit a wall. Hit a mirror and didn't hit anybody else inside the club," said Shaw. "You shouldn't be playing with guns."
Sorn has a lengthy criminal history and is charged as a felon in possession of a weapon and with having controlled substances.
