The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said a pedestrian was killed while directing traffic at a memorial event for a deputy Saturday evening.

The event was a carnival being held in memory of Deputy Larry Morrell, who died of cancer in June.

According to investigators, 44-year-old Christopher Scigliano, who was the event director for the carnival, walked onto Lithia Pinecrest Road to direct traffic shortly after 7 p.m.

Scigliano was first hit by a Chevrolet pickup truck. The impact caused him to be struck by a second vehicle, a Ford SUV. He was pronounced deceased following the crash.

Scigliano was a well-known resident in the FishHawk Ranch community. He owned the Wayback Burger restaurant on Fishhawk Crossing Boulevard.

"He had such a big heart and I think I can speak for the community and this is just a big loss for the community," said friend George Shea. "He was always making an impact."

The Sheriff's Office is actively investigating the incident.
