Most effective Zika mosquito sprays
TAMPA (FOX 13) - A local company apparently makes the best bug spray to prevent the type of mosquito that carries Zika from biting.
Consumer Reports put 16 bug sprays to the test to see which ones lasted and the picaridin products from Safety Harbor-based Sawyer got the best results.
Picaridin is a synthetic based on a pepper plant. Sawyer’s president Kurt Avery says the lotion lasts even longer than the spray. He also showed us a different option as well: permethrin spray that you can put on your clothes or a stroller instead of directly on your skin.
The most effective bug sprays specifically against Zika-carrying mosquitoes, according to Consumer Reports are Sawyer Picaridin, Natrapel 8 hour, and Off! Deepwoods 8. All last for about eight hours.
Ben's 30-percent Deet Tick & Insect Wilderness Formula lasts seven and a half hours. And Repel Lemon Eucalyptus for about seven.
Natural oils, like cedar or geranium for example, do work but just not for a long time.
