Off-duty Tampa officer, friend rescue man who jumped from Gandy Bridge, police say
TAMPA (FOX 13) - A Tampa police officer was called to action on his day off, likely saving the life of a man jumped from the Gandy Bridge.
On Wednesday, off-duty officer James Wilcher and his friend, Chip Roberts, were in their boat fishing near the bridge when they saw the man jump off of it.
Aviation video posted on the Tampa Police Department's Facebook page shows the duo immediately jumping into action, pulling the man to the side of their boat, and holding him above water for 30 minutes until the agency's marine units could arrive.
They said the individual was semi-conscious. They managed to bring the man to shore where he was then rushed to the hospital. There is no word on his condition.
