A Pinellas County sheriff's deputy shot and killed a man described as violent, intoxicated and wielding a knife, according to the sheriff's office.

It happened at about 5:28 p.m. Wednesday at 4280 Mallory Dr. in Lealman. That's in the Duval Park community, where many veterans and their families live. Neighbors said the man was a veteran.

A neighbor called dispatchers to report his neighbor - a 36-year-old woman - was in a domestic dispute with her boyfriend. The neighbor said there was a 10-year-old boy and 12-year-old girl in the home, too.

The woman's boyfriend, a 43-year-old man, was reportedly violent and intoxicated.

Deputy Tyler Green and Deputy Brennen Wede responded to the call and knocked on the door several times. That's when the man came to the door, holding up what was described as a large knife. The sheriff's office said the man came through the door and toward the deputies, saying the "would have to kill him."

The sheriff's office said the deputies ordered him to drop the knife, but he continued forward. Deputy Wede stepped back as Deputy Green fired at the man. He was later pronounced dead at 5:51 p.m.

Neither of the deputies were injured.
