The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a deputy-involved shooting that happened Sunday evening in Lakeland.

Investigators say a deputy made a traffic stop on Daughtery Road near Pearce Road just before 8:00 p.m. The suspect, identified as Shannon Baxley, 40, refused to comply with the deputy's demand to step out of the vehicle, hit the deputy with his car, flipping the deputy onto the hood of his patrol car, and fled. The deputy is expected to be ok.

Deputies then pursued the suspect’s vehicle and forced his car off the road in unincorporated Auburndale. Once stopped, the suspect jumped out of the car and the shooting occurred. Sheriff Judd said he was shot three times but he is expected to survive.

Deputies treated the suspect’s injuries until medical crews arrived. He was transported to a local hospital. No other deputies were injured in the shooting.

The suspect has a criminal history dating back to 1995, according to Sheriff Judd.
