Portillo's, a Chicago institution, opens up in Brandon
BRANDON, Fla. - A taste of Chicago is coming to the Bay Area.
Portillo's Beef, Burgers and Salads officially opened April 12th. Folks from all over waited for hours to get their hands on the Signature Hot Dogs and Beef Sandwiches.
The founder, Dick Portillo, was on hand for the opening right in front of the replica of his original "dog house" which he opened back in 1963 on just his and his wife's savings of $1,100.
The toppings on the hot dogs at Portillo's allow for 128 different combinations. Even though ketchup is considered an insult to foodies in the Chicago area, they'll put it on if you'd like.
Portillo's only has restaurants open in California, Arizona, Indiana, and of course, Illinois, but now it's come to Florida, with this first store in Brandon.
