Portillo's turns 55 and offers 55-cent cake slices

Portillo's is turning 55 years old and the restaurant is celebrating with 55-cent slices of its famous chocolate cake.

The iconic Chicago-born restaurant has two locations in Florida -- in Tampa and Brandon -- along with restaurants in California, Arizona, Indiana, and, of course, Illinois.

The famous double-layer cakes are baked fresh every morning, Portillos says, before being frosted with chocolate icing. The restaurant is offering a slice of it for 55 cents with purchase of an entree at all locations. The offer is available for dine-in and drive-thru, but not online, delivery, or catering orders.

Dick Portillo opened the first Portillo's restaurant in 1963 as the "Dog House" with his wife's savings of $1,100, and over the past 55 years, it's grown to more than 50 restaurants.
