Program helps Holocaust survivors stay independent

CLEARWATER (FOX 13) - A program from the Gulf Coast Jewish Family and Community Services is benefiting survivors of the holocaust.

The Holocaust Survivor Program aims to keep those who need help in their later years living an independent life, without the confinement they may have experienced in concentration camps.

"If you think about just the mere survival, and holocaust survival, and the things that survivors experience in their earlier years, being in an institution is not what you want," GCJFCS President Dr. Sandra Braham explained of the perceived institutional nature of assisted living and nursing homes.

The program provides in-home care, transportation and support groups.

"We raise funds through partners and donors to ensure that they have a lovely life that's happy and that's without further trauma, so that they can move on in a way with dignity," said Dr. Braham.
