A Baltimore County Police Department officer who was shot in the line of duty Thursday is the daughter of the Sarasota Police Department's chief, Bernadette DiPino.

The Sarasota Police Department said Chief DiPino is in Maryland to be with her daughter and family.

The Baltimore County Police Department said on Twitter officers were called sometime before 1 p.m. Thursday to a home in the Parkville Precinct of Baltimore County, Maryland regarding a man with a gun.

Officers confronted the man, who fired several rounds at the officers. Chief DiPino's daughter was shot "in the upper body," the department said.

The officer was seriously injured and was in surgery at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center. FOX 45 News in Baltimore said the officer was expected to survive.

The police department said an adult male was found dead inside the home. He had apparently been shot. Police said, "circumstances surrounding both the injured officer and the deceased male are still under investigation."

According to Sarasota police, Chief DiPino began her career as a police officer with the Baltimore County police in 1985.
