Tampa police officers were forced to open fire on an armed suicidal man early Saturday morning.

According to investigators, the man called 911 shortly before 2 a.m. and stated, "I apologize to the cop that has to shoot me."

When officers arrived at the home on W. Kenmore Avenue, the man who had called 911 was armed with a knife.

Police said the man charged at the officer, who initially tried using a Taser on him. The man was shot when he continued to charge toward the officer.

The man, who hasn't been publicly identified, was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital and is expected to survive.

No officers were injured.
