Tampa's heroes can get $20,000 toward buying a home

First-responders, teachers, and nurses may receive up to $5,000 towards purchasing a home in the city of Tampa thanks to a new program announced by Mayor Jane Castor and the city’s Housing and Community Development division.

Community Heroes Homebuyer Program will give eligible heroes -- law enforcement, fire rescue personnel, K-12 public school personnel, hospital and medical personnel, and municipal government employees -- a $5,000 grant to match the $15,000 provided through the city’s Dare to Own the Dream Homeownership Program.

That's $20,000 toward the purchase of a home for the community's heroes. The city hopes the added funds will do more to give opportunity for them to own a home in the community where they work.

The city of Tampa was given a $250,000 grant from Federal Home Loan Bank Atlanta for the program.
