Teacher accused of sex with student goes to trial

PLANT CITY (FOX 13) - Megan Connors may regret walking away from a plea deal that would have sent her away for 10 years, because as soon as she rejected it, prosecutors upped the charges.

Hillsborough Assistant State Attorney Courtney Derry explained to the judge in court, the enhancement of the law regarding authority figures over students - raising it from a first degree felony to life felonies - Connors could face life in prison if convicted. 

Hillsborough Circuit  Judge Christopher Sabella wanted to make she understood what that meant.

"You are aware of the possible consequences to a life felony if the jury is to find you guilty? You face up to life in prison on these charges, " Sabella asked Connors.

Connors was a teacher at Turkey Creek Middle School in Plant City. Detectives say she had sex with a 15-year-old student multiple times, including in the boy's own bedroom. They say she even went as far as getting him out of class to have sex with him in another classroom on campus.

Now, Connors' fate will be in the hands of a jury who will decide whether or not she deserves to spend the rest of her life locked up. The trial starts Monday and is expected to last two days.
