TECO glitch overcharges some customers thousands

Tampa Electric Company says thousands of its customers who paid their bills on Sunday wound up overcharged -- and possibly overdrawn.

Due to a computer glitch from the vendor TECO uses to process bills, anyone who paid their bill on Sunday was charged for all of the months in 2016 leading up to this bill, combined. That means more than $1000 for many TECO customers.

For anyone whose bank account overdrew due to the glitch, TECO said they will cover those fees and "make their customers whole again."

TECO did not have a timeline for reimbursements and said it cannot accept bill payment until the glitch is fixed.

TECO also said it is waiving late fees for anyone whose bill is due right now and won't "throw anyone under the bus."

TECO would not reveal the name of its payment processing vendor, but confirmed the company is based in Tampa and has a long-standing partnership with TECO.

TECO said it is working to contact everyone impacted by the glitch.
