Train hits truck in Plant City
PLANT CITY, Fla. - An Amtrak train crashed into a semi-truck in Plant City Tuesday afternoon, splattering its payload.
The driver was delivering tires to the Warren Equipment site. Deputies said, when he stopped, he left the trailer right on the tracks.
The train tried to stop, but couldn't. Workers inside Warren Equipment were stunned.
"When I heard, first the commotion, my heart just dropped. I dropped my tools and ran outside," one employee told FOX 13 News.
The truck driver managed to get out unhurt.
The train was heading to Miami from New York, with more than 90 people onboard. Three were taken to the hospital for what were being called "stress-related issues."
"Real lucky, because those Amtrak trains be going pretty fast," said the worker.
The train crossing at Warren Equipment doesn't have any crossing arms, which is not unheard of, according to CSX. Workers said trucks come and go there all day long.
A pair of investigations, one by the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, the other by Amtrak, were underway .
