Wildfire burns 50 acres near Gandy Blvd. in Tampa
TAMPA (FOX 13) - Tampa Fire Rescue crews fought a wildfire burning in Tampa near Gandy Boulevard and West Shore Blvd. Friday.
The fire broke out around 4:45 p.m. on a vacant property near the waters of the Old Tampa Bay.
The property is located at the end of W Fair Oaks Ave, at Dunmore Ave. The property was once known as the Georgetown Apartments, which have since been torn down.
Tampa Fire Rescue said favorable winds helped the burn move toward the water and prevent damage to structures. About 50 acres were involved. There were no injuries to firefighters.
TFR is not sure what started the fire, which was under control Friday night. Crews were staying on the scene to douse any hot spots and prevent flair ups.
TFR said, "This incident is another reminder that great care should be taken with regard to fires during Florida's dry season. The City of Tampa has a permanent ban on open fires."
