A barbecue stand owner in Zephyrhills opened fire on an apparent robber Thursday afternoon, deputies say, killing him.

Jordan's Barbecue stand is a longtime fixture at the intersection of Eiland Blvd. and Hilton Road. According to Pasco Sheriff Chris Nocco, it was around 3:30 p.m. when an unknown Hispanic man approached the owners of the business and demanded money.

According to witnesses, the man had a 6- to 8-inch sharp spike in his pocket.

The business owners said they believed they were being robbed. One of the business owners then shot the man and he later died at the hospital.

Sheriff Nocco called it an act of self-defense.

Investigators are still attempting to identify the man who was shot.
