Another fatal pedestrian accident at problem intersection in Clearwater
CLEARWATER (FOX 13) - Clearwater police are on the scene of a fatal pedestrian traffic accident at Gulf-To-Bay Boulevard and Belcher Road Thursday morning. The victim appears to be an adult male. Westbound lanes are closed at this time.
A wheelchair has been reported at the scene, but it is unclear if it is related to the accident at this time.
This is not the first death to occur at this intersection. The location has a history of multiple fatal accidents, including that of a crossing guard in 2014.
The busy intersection has 80,000 cars pass through it each day. Between January 2009 and December 2013, 153 crashes occurred here.
FOX 13's Alcides Segui reached out to the Department of Transportation and a spokesperson said changes had recently been made at the intersection based on the results of a safety audit there.
Investigators said they are still piecing together what happened during Thursday's accident. Once the investigation is complete, the results will be sent to DOT to be evaluated, and DOT will decide if additional changes should be made.
