Bay Area attorney launches website, app to help foster children

For children in foster care, understanding their rights can feel overwhelming. That's where Foster Power comes in – a website designed to provide foster children with clear, accessible information through videos and other resources.

"This is a way where they can really go to one centralized place and figure out, you know, what questions they might have about their situation and the benefits that they're entitled to, protections that they have," founder Taylor Sartor said.

One of the site's early users, Icsis Moore, now adopted and in high school, says Foster Power made a big difference during her time in the system.

"It's helped me with understanding that there's things I can do and knowing that I can do those things if I want to do those things," Moore said.

The website features videos explaining common questions, like "what are my educational rights?" and "what benefits do I have?"

"It's important because when kids are in foster care, they really have everything that they know taken away from them," said Sartor. "And a lot of times they don't have access to information on what's happening in their lives."

Sartor hopes the platform will continue to grow, reaching more children in foster care nationwide.

"The app is really to empower youth to become their own advocates and speak up and learn that, you know, they do have a voice and that there are a lot of protections that they have in foster care," she said.

Sartor says this isn't a website, but a lifeline, and that every child deserves to feel empowered, no matter their circumstances.

"There's just never been something like this before where they could have that information right at their fingertips in an app," she said.
