Beruff launches early ad campaign in bid for Senate

(FOX 13) - Manatee County developer Carlos Beruff has launched a TV ad blitz in his bid for a spot in the U.S. Senate.

While Beruff said he does not know exactly how much he's spending, he confirmed it's in the neighborhood of $1.5 million of his own money.

"Because I believe, if someone is not willing to bet on themselves, why should anyone else bet on you," Beruff explained.

Outside of his own campaign, Beruff is a donor to other republican campaigns and an appointee of Governor Rick Scott. On a scale of one to 10, he gives Gov. Scott an 11, because, Beruff says, he delivered on his campaign promises.

Beruff is following the strategy Scott used in 2010 to launch his bid for governor, launching an early ad campaign and focusing on his status as an outsider, with scathing attacks on Washington politics.

"Obama is a disaster, and Washington politicians are worthless. They waste our money and make America weaker, and they refuse to secure our border. It's ridiculous. Let's get rid of them," he said in his most recent commercial.

Beruff earned his wealth as a home builder, and earned praise from Governor Scott. He joined a crowded field of republicans seeking to succeed U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, who has said he won't seek re-election.
