Care after accident inspires woman to become nurse

TAMPA (FOX 13) - A horrible car accident turned out to be a huge blessing for Sydney Fisher. She was in the hospital for six months, but the care she received from the nurses changed her life forever.
 
"I flipped three times and was ejected," Fisher recalled.

The accident was forever etched in her mind. 

Fisher is 26-years-old. The accident happened when she was 19, driving in Orlando. Seemingly out of nowhere, she was hit by a truck.

The accident left her with six broken ribs, a broken pelvis and her back was broken in two places. 

Fisher was in school, studying criminal justice. When the accident happened, she never dreamed the nurses who cared for her night and day would have such an impact on her life. 

"Just those few nurses would come in, even just spend 10 minutes, it made such a difference," explained Fisher.

It was also a surprise, considering both her parents are nurses. Her mom worked at Tampa General Hospital for 32-years. It wasn't until she saw nurses through the eyes of a patient, that she decided it was what she wanted to do. When she left the hospital, she switched majors and began taking nursing classes.

"I found my passion with nursing. I love caring for people," Fisher said. "It's been such a blessing in my life." 

Fisher became a nurse in 2013. Like her mother, she got into the field because helping people is in her nature.

"I always tell people that you are involved in miracles. It's the miracles of life," Fisher's mom, Pam Sanders said. "It's the miracle of helping families when the healing isn't happening."

"I can care for them emotionally, make them feel safe, and that they are important to me, and they are not just my job," Fisher added.
