CLEARWATER, Fla. - Deputies in Hillsborough and Pinellas counties arrested 47 people for driving under the influence in an overnight operation dubbed "Saturation Saturday."
Several law enforcement agencies around the Tampa Bay area are participating in DUI crackdowns ahead of the Labor Day holiday.
"People think to get a DUI or to be drunk, it's like stumbling drunk, not being able to talk, not being able to walk. That's not it. It's impairment. Impairment begins very soon. It doesn't take up until .1 to be impaired," said Linda Unfried, a member of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, or MADD.
Between Saturday evening and Sunday morning, deputies with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office made 15 DUI arrests and three arrests for other felonies. The agency said 72 citations were issued, along with 127 warnings.
In Pinellas, 32 people were arrested for DUIs, along with a handful of arrests for drugs, driving with no valid license and other misdemeanors.
In addition, deputies issued 216 traffic citations for various violations.
