Winter Haven Police investigators are on the scene of an apparent homicide early Friday morning, where a man was found dead inside a car.

It was an unsettling wake up call to people on the 600 block of Avenue I. Just after 1 a.m. Friday, shots rung out. Laurie Smith, who just happened to be awake, heard at least three shots, one right after the other.

Then she heard a man's voice.

"I was like, 'Get up. Get up," Smith told FOX 13. "It was like anger. Like yelling at somebody. It was like Pulp Fiction movies."

Then she heard the voice of a distraught woman.

"Lordy, Lordy, Lordy," Smith recalls the woman saying. "And the only thing I heard her saying was 'Hang on,' or 'Hold on,' begging him not to die."

Police say Jimmie Rogers, Jr., a father of two children, was shot while in the driver's seat. He died at the hospital.

Police say the murder does not appear to be random. Early Friday, they had no suspects or motive.

The shooting has Smith shaken. She said, even thought she has lived in some of the worst neighborhoods in Los Angeles, this is something that really made an impression.

"Never had shootings like this," she commented. "Never had someone die outside my door."
